Draft

What personal data we collect, why, who sees it, and what you can ask of us. Version 2026-09-28-draft, updated 28 September 2026.

This is placeholder wording. It will be replaced by our lawyer’s text before Coffee to World opens to the public. Points still to be settled are marked below.

Who we are

Coffee to World runs this marketplace and decides how the data in it is used. Ethiopia's Personal Data Protection Proclamation No. 1321/2024 applies to it.

To ask about your data, email hello@coffeetoworld.com.

To be confirmed by our lawyer: Our registered business name and address, and our registration with the Ethiopian Communications Authority, are to be added.

What we collect

About you and your business:

  • Your name, your business or company name, and your role: supplier, exporter or international buyer.
  • Mobile numbers, and any email addresses or WhatsApp numbers you give for your contacts.
  • Your business address, and the addresses of your washing stations, warehouses or processing sites.
  • Registration and licence details, such as your TIN, commercial registration, business or export licence, certificate of competency and ECTA number, with their dates and the scans you upload.
  • Other documents you upload.
  • Your bank's name and the name on the account. We never ask for account numbers.
  • What you do on the marketplace: your listings, requests to buy, orders and sales, the problems you raise, and your contracts.
  • Calls with our team: the number, the time, how long the call lasted, and a recording where the call was recorded.
  • Notes our staff make while checking your account.

Why we collect it

  • To check that you are licensed and allowed to trade on each market.
  • To run your account, including texting you the codes you log in with.
  • To run trades, look into problems and prepare contracts.
  • To contact you about your account.
  • To meet our duties under Ethiopian law.

Who sees it

Our staff, as far as their work needs.

Coffee to World is the other side of every trade: it buys from sellers and sells to buyers. Buyers are never told who the seller is, and sellers are never told who bought.

Anyone visiting the marketplace sees your lots: where the coffee is from, its grade and processing, the quantity and the price Coffee to World sells it at, and its photos. Your name, your contacts, the title you gave the lot and your asking price are not shown. Keep your name out of the photos.

Service providers who do part of the work for us, and receive only what that part needs:

  • AfroMessage, which sends our text messages.
  • WebSprix, which carries phone calls with our team.
  • DocuSeal, the software contracts are signed with, which we run ourselves.

Where it is kept

Your data is kept on a server we run, not in your web browser. A copy is taken every night so it can be put back if something goes wrong.

To be confirmed by our lawyer: Where that server is, and how it meets Article 22 of the Proclamation, which asks for personal data collected in Ethiopia to be stored in Ethiopia.

How long we keep it

We keep your data while your account is open.

To be confirmed by our lawyer: How long we keep data after an account closes.

What you can ask of us

You can ask to see the data we hold about you, to have it corrected, or to have it deleted, and you can object to how we use it.

You can correct most of your details yourself, in My profile. For anything else, email hello@coffeetoworld.com.

If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Ethiopian Communications Authority.
